Chamber View: Advocating for the Capital Region

By Metro Chamber|April 2, 2016|News Coverage|

For 45 years, the Sacramento Metro Chamber has led a delegation annually to Washington, D.C. to advocate on behalf of our region’s most pressing needs as part of its Capitol-to-Capitol (Cap-to-Cap) program. This month, nearly 350 business, civic and political representatives will join this effort and connect with our Congressional representatives and members of the administration to promote the Capital Region, safeguard our resources and discuss priority initiatives.

Cap-to-Cap provides a unique opportunity for business and community leaders, from jurisdictions throughout our six-county region, to align around issues that impact us at-large. Leading up to the program, participants from 11 teams worked to determine which issues warrant our collective voice.

All of these efforts are designed to improve business recruitment, retention and expansion and provide quality job opportunities supporting our region’s families. Our delegation honed in on three critical areas of investment for our region: infrastructure, people and strategic initiatives.

We will promote the need for improved and reliable systems for moving goods and people and storing our water, we will seek funding for our education institutions and expansion of career pathway programs to build tomorrow’s workforce, and we will ask our representatives to support initiatives that play to our strategic advantages as a region; including expanded trade, support for small business development efforts, access to federal grants to expand our food and agricultural efforts and flood and wildfire prevention.

The program helps guide the policies and projects that form our future, and also, builds professional and personal connections between our community leaders themselves and with those who represent us in Washington. I steadfastly believe our region’s most amazing resource is its people. They are caring smart and motivated and when we act in concert, we achieve great things.
That’s why I’m honored to lead this program in its 46th year alongside our elected honorary vice chairs, Yolo County Supervisor Mary Jane Griego and Rancho Cordova Mayor David Sander.

The Cap-to-Cap delegation departs for Washington D.C. on Saturday, April 9, and I encourage you to follow our excitement from the road via #CaptoCap16.
