Today, Governor Brown signed AB 2317, a bill sponsored by the California State University (CSU) system and supported by Sac State and the Metro Chamber. The new law will allow CSU to independently award a Doctorate of Audiology Degree.
Prior to the law’s enactment, only one university in California could provide the training necessary for students to enter audiology, a high-skilled and high-wage field whose practitioners provide critical diagnostic and rehabilitative care for individuals with hearing and balance disorders.
In the past decade, the State has only trained 61 audiologists, and because of growth in our elderly population, as well as new regulations mandating newborn hearing screenings, the demand is rising.
Allowing the CSU to train more audiologists will help the state meet its healthcare needs while boosting high-wage careers for students in our region.
